Custom Design Suggestions

When designing certificates, there are a number of important factors to consider, and many of these factors are based solely on aesthetics and personal preferences. Of course, the language chosen will be based upon the particular martial art in which the student is advancing rank, and perhaps the language spoken by the student. Script is another choice based primarily on the preference of the teacher, parent, or recipient. You may choose of one of a few options, including cursive, semi-cursive, standard, clerical, or seal. Be sure to look at some samples of each before choosing the one that you want.

Choosing the border for your certificate may be the most important task. It will, of course, have a great effect on the general aesthetic appeal of your certificate. However, the border also may contain a symbol of traditional Asian significance.

A school administrator choosing a design specific to that school’s students will likely keep this in mind; if you are an individual parent or recipient, you may want to do a little research into the meaning of each available choice before making a decision.

Origins of the Borders Design

The origin of the phoenix and classic border design originates in the imperial court of China and was only used on Official documents by the Emperor.

Three symbols of the Phoenix border.

• The Phoenix is a symbol of Virtue, Morality, Benevolence, Faith and Courtesy. The male is on the left side and the female on the right facing each other on the top center of the certificate.

• The Cloud placed on the top center of the certificate, between the male and female Phoenix symbolizes luck as clouds bring rains for farming.

• The Paulownia, situated on the sides and bottom of the certificate along with Chrysanthemum (crest of the Royal Family of Japan) symbolize an oath to the Gods. Four symbols of the Classic border The Blue Dragon is identified with the water gods and the gods of fertility who invoke the rains on which the harvest depends. To Confucian scholars, this mythic creature of supernatural powers represents strength, virtue and loyalty.

Other Symbols

The Blue Dragon

Associated with water gods and gods of fertility, the blue dragon is a symbol of virtue, loyalty, and strength. The blue dragon is considered the protector of the Chinese/Japanese zodiacs, and is therefore, a symbol of leadership.

The Black Tortoise

The Chinese word, Xuanwu, translates into “tortoise” in English, but this is most often symbolized by a tortoise and a snake. This is one of the four Chinese Constellation Symbols, sometimes is called the Black Warrior, and represents winter.

The White Tiger

The White Tiger is another Constellation Symbol. In myth, the white tiger was said to visit only those emperors who had ruled virtuously throughout their entire reigns. It represents autumn.

The Menkyo System

Modern Japanese budo are ranked with the belt system. As a student in budo advances in levels of skill and complexity, he/she earns a different colored belt, with the black belt being the ultimate goal. A black belt in a Japanese budo program indicates mastery of the skill, the ability to teach or coach, and a balance of life, emotion, and intellect.

While rankings in budo have existed for centuries, they have not always involved belts. From the 8th century through around 1877, budo were known as bujutsu the classical arts, and the Menkyo System was used to track ranks and advancement. This system was originally fashioned after the court ranks that were held in high regard in the Japanese royal empires.
