What is a logo?

Logo-History

History has witnessed a world of famous logos. Some of the logos are so famous that they will be always remembered. This process of highlighting business image is not new. It has been practiced for ages.

The word logo means a name, symbol or trademark, which is designed for easy recognition. It all started with a cipher consisting of a single letter, and later a design or mark consisting of two or more letter intertwined.

Greece is a country of symbols. It is famous for its mythical symbols that war used to describe the history and lives of pharaohs and his decuples. Archeological survey shows that many early Greek and roman coins bear the monograms or logos of rulers. The most famous imprint on the coin is the sacred monogram, which is formed by the conjunction of the first two Greek letters of XR, S, T, O and S, (Christ). Even the hub ages were enormously productive in inventing cipher for religious, creative, and marketable use.

It was in the thirteenth century traders started using designs, which evolve from plain cipher to trademark for trader and merchants. With the advancement of time and technology, the face of logo and logo designing started to change. And with the advent of information technology, logos have undergone a sea change. What Makes a Great Logo

Logo design is undoubtedly one of most challenging aspects of graphic design. It may seem easy at first glance, but successful logos tend to have several characteristics in common. The features great logos share are:

1. Simplicity Don’t over complicate your design. Simplicity is a good thing, and when it comes to design, less is definitely more.

2. Unique. In a world full of swooshes, arcs, leaves and other logo clichés, this is easier said than done.

3. Relevant. When you’re designing a logo, think about the appropriateness of the symbol or typefaces you use.

4. Memorable. Your logo design is a visual representation of what the company stands for. The logo will often only receive a quick look, so it needs to make a fast impression.

5. Focused – use one idea to make the design special.

The Budo Logo

Japanese family crests, or Kamon, came into existence around the 12th century. Coincidentally, this was about the same time as the advent of European Coat of Arms. In Japanese, 'Ka' is one of several words connoting family and 'mon' is short for 'monshou' or crest. Japanese kamon have gone through significant evolution in terms of their use and social significance over the centuries. Initially, only members of the imperial family, lords, and samurai were permitted use of kamon. Between the 1300s and 1500s kamon began to take on a more military context and were used as battle insignia, again, much like the European Coat of Arms. However, by the time of the peaceful Edo period (1600-1868) use of kamon was widespread and evolved to civilian use.

Whereas European heraldry tended to be elaborate and utilize more violent and predatory animals such as lions and eagles, Japanese kamon were usually monochromatic and would commonly utilize less pretentious elements of nature such as flowers, plants, fish and insects. The choice of these kinds of symbols may perhaps suggest thought-provoking differences between Japanese and European cultures at the time. Today there are more than 10,000 different kamon in use today in Japan based on about 350 basic patterns.

Typically, use of a family kamon is passed from father to first-born son. Second and third-born sons would commonly modify the family emblem to one degree or another. Kamon were/are frequently displayed on the center of the back of a kimono garment, just below the nape of the neck. Kamon are also frequently displayed on lanterns outside of residences.
